Versions

Keep several variants of one board without copying it.

A Version is a variant of a board that shares everything with the original except what you change. For example, use Versions to translate the text while the layout and artwork stay shared. Versions are listed in the Versions tab of the Side panel.

The Main Version shows the English text and the shared artwork
The Spanish Version overrides the text while keeping the same artwork

Main and secondary Versions

Every board has a Main Version, marked with a MAIN badge in the list. A new Version starts out looking exactly like Main. It stores only what you change while it is active, and everything else keeps following Main, so later edits to Main show up in every Version that hasn't changed that content. Editing an animation block gives the Version its own complete copy of that block, so later changes to the block in Main no longer reach it.

Three kinds of change are stored in a Version:

  • Edits: changed properties of a shape, such as its text, color, or position, replace Main's values.
  • Deletions: hide the shape in that Version while Main keeps it.
  • New shapes: shapes created while the Version is active exist only there.

Working with Versions

Create a Version

Starts a new Version that follows Main.

  • Operation: choose New at the bottom of the Versions tab.
  • Result: a new Version that looks like Main and follows it, active right away.

Switch Versions

Shows another Version's content on the board.

  • Operation: choose a Version in the list.
  • Result: the board shows that Version, highlighted in the list. A secondary Version's name appears in the Board header under the board title, when the title is shown. Switching also clears the undo history.

Rename a Version

The Versions list with drag handles for two secondary Versions and an open options menu

Changes the name of a Version.

  • Operation:
    1. Choose Rename in the Version's Version options menu.
    2. Type the name and leave the field.
  • Result: the new name shows in the list. Main can be renamed too.

Reorder Versions

Changes the order of the list.

  • Operation: drag a Version by its handle.
  • Needs: at least two secondary Versions. Main always stays first.

Delete a Version

Removes a secondary Version.

  • Operation: choose Delete in the Version's Version options menu and confirm.
  • Needs: a secondary Version. Main can't be deleted.
  • Result: the Version and its changes are removed for good. Main is unaffected, and deleting the active Version takes you back to Main.

Going back to Main's content

Reset selection to Main highlighted in the Actions panel

Drops a Version's own changes on the selection so it follows Main again.

  • Operation: with a secondary Version active, select the changed shapes, animation blocks, or both, and click Reset selection to Main in the Actions panel.
  • Result:
    • Shapes: the selected shapes, their contents, and their animation blocks go back to Main's values. Shapes created only in this Version are removed.
    • Animation blocks: the selected blocks follow Main again. Their target shapes and start states keep their changes.

Applying a Version's changes to Main

Apply selection to Main highlighted in the Actions panel

Moves selected content from a secondary Version into Main. Every Version follows Main, so the content then shows up in all of them, except where a Version has its own changes to it.

  • Operation: with a secondary Version active, select the shapes, animation blocks, or both that you want to apply, and click Apply selection to Main in the Actions panel.
  • Result:
    • Shapes: Main receives the selected shapes, the content they need, and their animation blocks.
    • Animation blocks: Main also receives their target shapes, including their text and appearance, their start states, their block pauses, and any other changed blocks those pauses need.
    • This Version: it keeps its appearance and now follows Main for the applied content.
  • Tip: applying takes effect at once and can't be undone.
