Imports
Bringing boards, files, web addresses, and pasted content into Irakasi.
Content comes into Irakasi in these ways:
- A downloaded board: becomes a new board in your browser. See Uploading a board.
- Files: files from your device become shapes on the current board. See Importing files.
- Web addresses: become the shape that fits them: an image, an audio clip, a video, or a web embed. See Importing a web address.
- Shapes from a canvas file: tldraw, Excalidraw, and Irakasi files add their shapes to the board you have open. See Inserting a canvas file.
- Pasted content: becomes the shape that fits it. See Pasting.
- Files as cards: keep a file on the board as a card, within the size limits. See Adding files as file cards.
Uploading a board

Uploads a board file from your device to your browser, as a new board.
- Operation: choose Upload at the bottom of the Boards list of the Side panel, and choose the file.
- Needs: an
.irakasifile saved with Download board. A file from Export shapes can't be uploaded; insert it instead. See Downloading a board. - Result: a new board with everything the file holds: its shapes, animations, media, and Versions. The board you had open stays as it was.
- Tip: to keep the shapes of a file from another app as a board of their own, create a new board first and then insert the file into it.
Importing files

Adds files from your device to the current board.
- Operation, one of:
- Drop the files on the board.
- Copy them on your device and paste them on the board with the keyboard. Browsers give copied files to a web page only when you paste with the keyboard, so buttons and menus, such as Paste in the App menu, can't paste them.
- Choose Import file in the App menu and pick them. It lists images, videos, audio, PDFs, spreadsheets, and Irakasi, tldraw, and Excalidraw files.
- Result: each file becomes the shape that fits its type, as the table below shows. A canvas file adds all its shapes.
- Place: where you dropped or pasted them, or in the center of the view. Several files line up in a row, and more than four form a grid. They may not keep the order you picked them in.
- Selection: the new shapes are selected.
- Tip: up to 100 files can come in at once.
| File | Becomes | Size limit |
|---|---|---|
.png, .jpg, .webp, .gif, .svg | Image | 10 MB |
.mp4, .mov, .webm | Video | 50 MB |
.mp3, .wav, .m4a, when the browser can play them | Audio | 50 MB |
.pdf, .epub, .cbz | Document | 50 MB |
.csv, .tsv, .xls, .xlsx, .ods | Table | |
.md and other Markdown files | Rich text | |
.txt | Text | |
.irakasi, .tldr, .excalidraw | The shapes they hold | |
| Any other file | File card | 50 MB |
- Images and videos over the limit: the Compress image to import or Compress video to import dialog opens, where you compress the file until it fits the limit, and then it comes in. See Media optimization.
- Can be compressed: JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, and videos.
- Can't be compressed: GIFs, other animated images, and SVGs, so they can't be added.
- Images made lighter on import: three settings in App Settings control it:
- Optimize raster: compresses images, except animated ones.
- Max image dimension: scales down images larger than this size, even with Optimize raster off. Animated images and SVGs keep their size.
- Optimize SVG: cleans up SVG files.
- Spreadsheets: the Import spreadsheet dialog opens, and the sheet you pick becomes a table. See Importing a spreadsheet.
- Canvas files: see Inserting a canvas file.
Adding files as file cards
Keeps files on the board as cards, without showing their content.
- Operation: pick File card in the Tools panel, draw the card, and give it the file with Replace file, in the File section of the Attributes panel. A file that Irakasi can't show, dropped or pasted on the board, also becomes a card.
- Result: the card holds the file, within the import size limits. Download file saves it, and Open works when the browser or device supports its format. See File cards.
Importing a web address

Adds the content of a web address to the current board.
- Operation:
- Choose Import URL in the App menu.
- Paste the address and choose Accept.
- Result: the address becomes the same shape as a pasted link: an image, an audio clip, a video, or a web embed. It lands in the center of the view and is selected.
- Tip: some websites don't allow their pages to be shown inside a web embed.
Inserting a canvas file

Adds the shapes of an Irakasi (.irakasi), tldraw (.tldr), or Excalidraw (.excalidraw) file to the current board.
- Operation: drop the file on the board, or choose Insert at the bottom of the Boards list of the Side panel.
- Needs, one of:
- An
.irakasifile, from Download board or Export shapes. - A tldraw
.tldrfile, up to 64 MB. - An Excalidraw
.excalidrawfile, up to 64 MB.
- An
- Result: the shapes are added to the current board, centered where you dropped the file or in the center of the view, and selected. Several files line up like any other files.
- From an Irakasi file, they come with their animations.
- A tldraw file with several pages opens Import tldraw pages, where you choose which pages to bring in.
- Shapes of other apps with no exact match in Irakasi are approximated or skipped, and a notice sums up how many were affected.
- Tip: to add the content of another board stored in this browser, choose Insert in that board's options menu in the Boards list.
Pasting
Adds what you copied, in Irakasi or in another app, to the current board.
- Operation: paste on the board, or choose Paste in the App menu. Both bring in the same content, except files copied on your device, which browsers give to a web page only when you paste with the keyboard.
- Result: what you copied becomes the shape that fits it, as listed below.
- Pasting with the keyboard places it at the pointer. Paste in the App menu places it in the center of the view.
- Shapes that land on a frame go into it. While you work inside a group, pasted Irakasi shapes stay in that group.
- With a single text, geometry shape, or arrow selected, pasted plain text replaces its text instead of adding a shape. This doesn't apply to links, diagrams, code, or Markdown.
- Tip: while you edit a shape's text, pasting goes into that text.
| What you copied | Becomes |
|---|---|
| Shapes in Irakasi | The same shapes, with their animations. The animation starts at the playhead and keeps its timing. |
| An image | An image. |
| Files | Shapes, as in Importing files. |
| Cells of a spreadsheet | A table, for a range of at least two rows and two columns. A single cell stays text. |
| A link | An image for an image file, an audio shape for an audio file, a video for YouTube, Vimeo, Mux, Cloudflare Stream, or a video file, and a web embed for anything else. Several links give one shape per address. |
| SVG code | An image. |
| A Mermaid diagram | Shapes and arrows for flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and class diagrams. Other diagrams become an image. |
| Code | A code text shape, when it's recognized as code. |
| Markdown | A rich text, when it's recognized as Markdown. |
| The code of a complete web page | An HTML shape. Content copied from a web page doesn't always become one. |
| Shapes in tldraw or Excalidraw | Converted shapes, as in Inserting a canvas file. |
| Any other text | A text. |
