Local boards

How local boards are stored in your browser, what that means for your work, and how to keep it safe.

A local board lives in your web browser. You don't need an account: open Irakasi and start working. The first time you visit, Irakasi creates a board for you.

Where your work is stored

Local saving keeps your boards and the files you import in your browser's storage, on this device. It doesn't upload them to a server.

  • Saving: changes are saved automatically. Saving doesn't keep a history of earlier edits you could go back to; Versions are the variants you keep on purpose.
  • Undo: its history is cleared when you switch boards or Versions, reload, or close the tab.
  • One browser, one device: a board made in Chrome on your laptop doesn't appear in Firefox, or in Chrome on your phone.
  • Clearing site data: deletes your boards.
  • Private browsing: boards created in a private session are usually deleted when that session ends.
  • The browser's own cleanup: the browser can delete them when the device runs low on space. Safari can remove site data after seven days of Safari use without visiting Irakasi.

To keep a copy, or to move a board to another browser or device, download it as an .irakasi file and upload it there. See Downloading a board and Uploading a board.

In the future, you'll be able to sign in and keep your boards in the cloud, so they follow you to any browser or device and you can share them with others.

An AI app you connect can read the local boards in this browser and edit the board open in the connected tab. See Connect board to AI.

Working in several tabs

You can have Irakasi open in more than one tab of the same browser:

  • Shared boards: the tabs share the stored boards and their list.
  • Same board in two tabs: it shows the same content in both, and edits made in one tab appear in the other as you work.
  • Deleting a board: other tabs showing it close when possible, or go back to the default board.

Repair on load

When you open a board, Irakasi checks which version of the app saved it:

  • Saved by an older version, or partly unreadable: Irakasi tries to repair it. Repair can fail or leave out content, so keep downloaded copies of important boards.
  • Saved by a newer version: this can happen when another tab already runs the latest Irakasi. A newer version can save new kinds of shapes or settings that an older one doesn't know, so the older tab doesn't open or change the board, and nothing is lost. Reload the page to get the latest version, then open the board again.

Deleting a local board

Deleting a local board needs confirmation and removes it from this browser for good. The default board can't be deleted. See Deleting a board.
