Transforming shapes overview

What the transform blocks share, how each is created, and the pages of this section.

Three fish with a curved position path, a rotation arc centered on the fish, and scale handles.

The blocks in this section animate the shapes' transform: their position, rotation, and size.

  • They are all created from the Actions panel in Animation mode, with the shapes selected.
  • What every block shares, from targets and timing to stagger and easing, is in Animation blocks. The pages here cover what is particular to each.

The blocks

BlockWhat it doesWorks on
Position AnimationMoves shapes along a straight line, a curve, or a list of points.Any shape. A selection of only texts on a path gets a path crawl instead.
Rotation AnimationTurns shapes around a center, with extra full turns.Any shape except cameras and texts on a path.
Scale AnimationStretches or squeezes shapes around a center, horizontally and vertically.Any shape except cameras and texts on a path.
Resize AnimationGives shapes a new width and height, keeping their stroke width. Texts change width and rewrap.Shapes that can be resized. Not arrows, texts on a path, or cameras.
Path CrawlSlides a text on a path along the shape it follows.Texts on a path.
Capture Real-TimeRecords a movement you make by hand as one of the blocks above. The same shapes as the block it records, and a single camera's zoom.

Creating a transforming block

Position, rotation, scale, and resize commands highlighted in the Actions panel.
  1. Select the shapes on the board.
  2. In Animation mode, choose the block's command in the Actions panel.

After it is created:

  • One block covers every selected shape.
  • It starts at the playhead, is selected, and its indicator shows on the board.
  • It changes nothing yet, except a Path Crawl, which comes with its movement set and moves the playhead to its end.
  • You set the change with the handles on the board, or in the Attributes panel.

What every block here shares

  • The change starts from the pose the shapes have at the block's start, after any earlier blocks, not from where they sit while you edit.
  • When the block ends, the shapes keep its end state until another block changes them.
