Sequences

Keeping several separate animations on one board.

An animated board with the Sequences list and the Timeline panel visible.

A sequence is one animation of the board, with its own timeline. You can create several sequences to animate the same shapes in different ways.

  • Active sequence: the one the editor works on, one at a time. The Timeline panel shows its blocks, and playback, exports, and new blocks use it.
  • Sequences list: in the Side panel, where you create, switch, and manage sequences. See The Sequences list.

What a sequence holds

Animation blocks

Two rotation tracks, with a block pause on the lower track.

Each sequence has its own animation blocks. A shape can have different blocks in each sequence, or be animated in one sequence and stay still in another.

Pauses

A timeline with several types of animation blocks and two vertical pause markers.

Pause markers and block pauses belong to the sequence where you create them. They affect only that sequence. See Animation pauses.

Shared across sequences

All sequences share:

  • The shapes and their starting state: the state each shape has before it is animated. Changes to that state affect every sequence, while edits to animation blocks stay in their sequence.
  • The Timeline panel settings:
    • The playhead.
    • The duration.
    • The playback range.
    • The zoom.
  • The animation settings:
    • The base speeds.
    • Maintain speed.
    • See through active camera.

The Sequences list

The Sequences list with four sequences and the New button below.

The Sequences list of the Side panel shows the sequences of the board. Choose Sequences there to open it.

  • New: adds an empty sequence at the end of the list and makes it active.
  • Reorder sequences: drag a sequence by its handle. The Player's Sequence menu follows this order.
  • Switch sequences: select another sequence's name to make it active. See Switching sequences.
  • Rename the active sequence: its name is a text field. Edit it, up to 40 characters.

Sequence options

An options menu beside a sequence in the list.

Open the Sequence options menu beside a sequence:

  • Duplicate: adds a copy with a new name, including its blocks and pauses, at the end of the list and makes it active.
  • Clear: removes all the sequence's blocks and pauses right away. The sequence stays in the list with its name.
  • Delete: removes the sequence after you confirm. If it was active, the first sequence in the list becomes active. You can't delete the last sequence.

Switching sequences

Three animation states of the same shapes.

When another sequence becomes active:

  • The Timeline panel changes: it shows the new sequence's blocks.
  • The playhead keeps its time: the board shows the shapes as this sequence animates them at that time. The time shown beside the playhead can change, because each sequence has its own pauses.
  • Unanimated shapes rest: shapes this sequence doesn't animate show the state they have before any animation.
  • Blocks are deselected: selected blocks and pauses are deselected, and selected shapes stay selected.

Moving blocks between sequences

Three rotation blocks outlined on one track, with a separate track below.

Moves or copies blocks to another sequence.

  • Operation:
    1. Select the blocks and choose Cut or Copy.
    2. Make the other sequence active.
    3. Choose Paste.
  • Result: the earliest block starts at the playhead, and the others keep their spacing. See Cut, copy, and paste blocks.

Copying shapes with their animation

When you paste shapes copied with their animation, their blocks come from every sequence, as long as all of a block's shapes were copied:

  • Blocks of the source's active sequence: they join the active sequence.
  • Blocks of its other sequences: they arrive as new sequences, with their original names.

Playing a sequence

The Player settings with the Sequence menu open and one sequence selected.
  • In the editor: the playback controls of the Timeline panel play the active sequence.
  • In the Player: it plays the sequence chosen in Sequence, in the Player settings. Until you choose one, it plays the active sequence.
  • Presentation mode steps: the pause markers of that sequence that last longer than zero, within the playback range, are the steps of Presentation mode. See Playback modes.

Exporting a sequence

Video and GIF exports render the active sequence. To export another one, make it active first. See Exports.
