Arranging

Ordering, aligning, and laying out shapes.

Six fish illustrations arranged in two rows

Arranging changes where the selected shapes sit in relation to each other: which one is on top, how they line up, how far apart they are, and how wide or tall they are.

Order

Arrangement commands in the Actions panel

Change which shapes sit on top of which.

  • Operation: click one of these in the Actions panel:
    • Send to the front: above every other shape.
    • Send forward: above the next shape it overlaps.
    • Send backward: below the next shape it overlaps.
    • Send to the bottom: below every other shape.
  • Result: the selected shapes move in the stacking order. Inside a frame or group, they only move among its shapes, and pinned frames always stay on top.
  • Tip: new and pasted shapes go on top, and a duplicate goes just above its original.

Align

Arrangement commands in the Actions panel

Line the selected shapes up on an edge or a center.

  • Operation: click one of these in the Actions panel:
    • Align shapes to the left
    • Align shapes to the right
    • Align shapes to the top
    • Align shapes to the bottom
    • Center shapes horizontally
    • Center shapes vertically
    • Center shapes: both axes at once.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes.
  • Result: every shape moves so that the chosen edge or center matches the outline of the whole selection.

Distribute

The faded shapes show the starting arrangement, and the arrow points to the result.

Distribute horizontally

Distribute shapes horizontally in the Actions panel
Six shapes before and after horizontal distribution, with equal gaps marked

Make the horizontal gaps between the shapes equal. The orange marks show the equal gaps.

  • Operation: click Distribute shapes horizontally in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: three or more selected shapes.
  • Result: the leftmost and rightmost shapes stay in place, and the others move sideways until the gaps match.

Distribute vertically

Distribute shapes vertically in the Actions panel
Six shapes before and after vertical distribution, with equal gaps marked

Make the vertical gaps between the shapes equal.

  • Operation: click Distribute shapes vertically in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: three or more selected shapes.
  • Result: the topmost and bottommost shapes stay in place, and the others move up or down until the gaps match.

Stack

Pack the selected shapes together. The faded shapes show the starting positions.

Stack horizontally

Stack shapes horizontally in the Actions panel
Six shapes in a widely spaced row, then packed together horizontally

Put the shapes in a row, in their current order from left to right.

  • Operation: click Stack shapes horizontally in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes.
  • Result: the leftmost shape stays in place and the others follow it, 10 pixels apart. Sizes and vertical positions don't change.

Stack vertically

Stack shapes vertically in the Actions panel
Six shapes in a widely spaced column, then packed together vertically

Put the shapes in a column, in their current order from top to bottom.

  • Operation: click Stack shapes vertically in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes.
  • Result: the topmost shape stays in place and the others follow it, 10 pixels apart. Sizes and horizontal positions don't change.

Stack in a grid

Stack shapes in a grid in the Actions panel
Six scattered shapes arranged in a grid of two rows and three columns

Arrange the shapes in rows and columns without resizing them.

  • Operation: click Stack shapes in a grid in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes.
  • Result: the shapes fill the grid row by row, in the order you selected them, 10 pixels apart. Each one is centered in its cell, and the grid is centered where the shapes were.

Stretch

The faded shapes show their original sizes and positions.

Stretch horizontally

Stretch shapes horizontally in the Actions panel
Five rectangles stretched to share the same left and right edges

Make every shape as wide as the selection.

  • Operation: click Stretch shapes horizontally in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes. Rotated shapes are left out unless they're turned by a multiple of 90 degrees.
  • Result: each shape's left and right edges move to the edges of the selection, and its height stays the same. A shape with Locked Ratio on keeps its proportions instead: its height changes with its width, centered where it was. A Text shape keeps its size and only moves to the left edge.

Stretch vertically

Stretch shapes vertically in the Actions panel
Five rectangles stretched to share the same top and bottom edges

Make every shape as tall as the selection.

  • Operation: click Stretch shapes vertically in the Actions panel.
  • Needs: two or more selected shapes. Rotated shapes are left out unless they're turned by a multiple of 90 degrees.
  • Result: each shape's top and bottom edges move to the edges of the selection, and its width stays the same. A shape with Locked Ratio on keeps its proportions instead: its width changes with its height, centered where it was. A Text shape keeps its size and only moves to the top edge.
